Attended Trinity College Dublin, attained his medical degree in 1879.In 1885 he was appointed MOH in Delorain Tasmania. In 1901 he was appointed as MO for Yorke Peninsula, Australia.


He was married to Edith Charlotte Musgrave Belcher. She was the 'Mrs Dickenson' who is much cited by Emily Hobhouse.

Notes:27/2/1902: Edith CM Dickenson to CSRC: asking for news of her husband from whom she has heard nothing; I think she says he had been treated for DT; 'Col Armstorng, RAMC at Maritzburg told me that any one whose constitution had been wrecked as Dr Dickenson's has might die very suddenly. He told me he was really unfit for medical service and I blame myself for having [ . . . ?] to go to Bethulie.'

18/2/1902: Cole Bowen to CSRC: Recommending to accept resignation. His behaviour lately has been far from satisfactory.
