VAB: Ds NG van der Merwe-versameling, Vol 2d: Portion of letter to Emily Hobhouse, c. 1922: The writer mentions also the arrival of the Inspector who remodelled the camp and dismissed the man who had been in control. This was Mr Cole Bowen who as Supt of Norvals Pont Camp had shown special fitness for the post and whose powers of organisation had done much to alleviate the miseries there endured.
Seeing the comparative success of his camp I had urged Major Goold-Adams to employ him as Inspector and Instructor for other camps such as Bloemfontein. Had he been then appointed thousands of lives might have been saved. It is to the credit of the Fawcett commission that they made the same suggestion. It was then done, but 6 months too late.

28/4/1902: CB to CSRC: resigning his position as travelling inspector as wishes to accept appointment as RM of Winburg from 1/5/1902
29/4/1902: CSRC to CB: Testifies to the efficient manner in which he has carried out his duties. 'I always felt that I could rely on your experience and good judgment in getting your opinion on the variosu knotty questions which are continually cropping up in the Administration of these Camps, and I shall miss your opinion very much.'
