Notes:These points about de Lotbiniere and his management of the 'black'
camps have been in my mind because I have found out a lot more about
him. Born in 1868 in Canada, he had a very distinguished military
career after 1902, especially during the First World War as a
Brigadier-General. He retired from the army with a knighthood in 1920
and settled down at Brandon Hall, Suffolk, where he died in 1937 and
where his descendants still live. I have written to see if there are
any private papers there (or elsewhere) from 1901-2. At the end of the
South African War he married Mildred Grenfell (sister of Julian
Grenfell). [Iain Smith, 14/4/2009]
