Obtained his degree in 1898 at University of Edinburgh; when war broke out he went to the SAR as a member of the Sivewright Ambulance, serving under Het Transvaalsche Roodekruis until capture at Pietersburg.
10/6/1913 married Katharina Elizabeth Steyn.
After the war he practised at Durbanville until 1908, then at Calvinia until 1935.

He refused to remain in Irene RC after the Pretoria women were dismissed.
