Scope:Else Schreiner, born in 1922, was a founder member of both the Liberal Party of South Africa and the Black Sash. An active member of the National Council of women in Natal for many years, she was National President 1983-1986. As Chairwoman of the Natal Midlands Women's Coalition 1992-1994, she co-ordinated regional work towards the Women's Charter for Effective Equality. Her husband, Professor G D L Schreiner, was Vice-Principal of the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, from 1976-1987. Her daughter Jenny Schreiner, was detained and imprisoned from 1987-1991 in Cape Town, as part of the Yengeni Trial described in Else Schreiner's book: "Time stretching fear". These records reflect these interests/concerns.
