I also salute the Black Sash and the National Union of South African Students. We note with pride that you have acted as the conscience of white South Africa. Even during the darkest days in the history of our struggle you held the flag of liberty high.

The Black Sash has tirelessly campaigned for justice and equality throughout South Africa for over 50 years. This work has resulted in an archive that is scattered institutionally and geographically.
The Black Sash Archival Collections in South Africa database aims to facilitate access to this dispersed material, enabling researchers to identify what archival material is held on the Black Sash and where it is located. It is not a substitute for accessing the actual records.
The database was designed to enable searching of collections (a group of records held in a repository) containing materials on, or related to the Black Sash, as well as searching of units within these collections (the smallest component of a collection found in the inventory). The database was compiled using the information received from the contributing repositories in the amount of detail supplied.
The database is a work in progress. Please contact us if you are aware of any errors or omissions or have additional details about materials already identified: lib-mss@uct.ac.za or +27 21 650 4424
The Black Sash and UCT Libraries are grateful to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for their generous support and to the co-operation and assistance received from the various repositories who contributed to this project.
