Quick Guide

The Quick Guide is a list of all the items relevant to the Black Sash in this particular collection.

Dick Usher (Donor)

Repository: Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town Libraries, University of Cape Town
Reference code: BC1069
Extent: ca.5100 items. Extent of Black Sash material is unknown.
City: Cape Town
Dated: 1983-1993. Black Sash materials are from 1986-1987
Scope:This collection was donated to the Manuscripts and Archives Department of UCT Libraries by free lance labour journalist, Dick Usher. The collection reflects all aspects of Southern African Life affecting Trade Unions and Trade Union activities. It comprises several hundred news items received in 'fax' form reflecting events taking place in different parts of Southern Africa, particularly during the late 1980s and early 90s.

The events thus recorded are of particular interest considering the vast scope and the rate at which political change is taking place within South Africa. One cannot help but make a comparative study of Trade Union activities within the homeland territories, South Africa and its surrounding states; with the extensive range of comparative material available.

Information on general topics such as Aids, Absenteeism, Privatisation, Education and boycotts, as well as specific topics such as the Government budget in 1992, Codesa, the Presidents Council and Labour legislation, is also included.

Lastly, some labour publications both by Dick Usher and other writers are included in the final section.

The Black Sash materials seem to relate to trade unions.
