History of the Groote Schuur Campus
With the opening of the new buildings of the University of Cape Town on the Groote Schuur Estate, the South African College entered its third home. The College began in Long Street in 1829, moved to Government Avenue in 1841 and the first buildings were ready for occupation on Groote Schuur in 1928.

The Act by which the South African College became incorporated in the University of Cape Town in 1918 provided that the seat of the university should be on the Groote Schuur Estate.

J.M. Solomon, a 32 year-old, up-and-coming South African architect, was appointed to design the new university, with Sir Edwin Luytens as the consulting architect.

After Solomon's suicide in 1920, the university appointed Hawke, McKinlay and Walgate to complete his designs. This trio introduced several changes to Solomon's plans, such as the aligning of the buildings on a curve to conform to the contours of the slope, rather than on a straight line as Solomon intended.

Most UCT departments were transferred to the Groote Schuur estate in 1929 and 1930.
