INTRODUCTION

Biographical Note

Hubert John Kidd was born in England in December 1896. He was educated at Uppingham School in England and served in the 1st World War - was wounded at the Battle of the Somme.

He won the Alleyn Classical Scholarship at University College oxford where he gained an M.A. Degree with Honours in Modern History.

In 1922 he joined the staff of Diocesan College, Rondebosch to direct the new post matric class. He taught English, History, Greek and Latin. In 1930 he became House Master of Founders House. He was appointed vice Principal of the College in 1936. In 1943 he succeeded Cannon R H C Birt (his brother in law) as Head Master of the Diocesan College. He was chairman of the Conference of Head Masters and Head Mistresses of Private Schools in South Africa. A keen student of International Affairs Mr Kidd gave radio talks on the subject from 1944-1947. He was a member of the Institute of International Affairs, President of the Owl Club and for many years associated with the South African Committee of the quarterly "Round Table" first as secretary and later, after the death of J H Hofmeyr in 1948, as it's chairman.

H J Kidd married Mary Maytham the noted flower artist in 1948. He was to have retired as Head Master of Bishops at the end of 1963, but died in October 1963 at King Williamstown en route to the Conference of Head Master and Head Mistresses in Natal.

The Collection

The Collection of Hubert John Kidd papers consists of a few personal papers including his school reports at Uppingham School England, and appointment diaries 1951-1963. Letters to H J Kidd from his family, friends, staff and old boys of Diocesan College, several from O.D.'s written during World War 2. Typescripts of the radio broadcasts made by H J Kidd about the war and international subjects from 1944-1947. Manuscripts of his sermons, and speeches which include end of school year speeches and others. Miscellaneous items relating to Diocesan College in­cluding centenary publications and photographs of school buildings. Items of his personal interest in international affairs including news clippings 1929-1939. Letters of sympathy from friends and staff of Diocesan College to Mrs Mary Maytham Kidd on the death of her husband H J Kidd in 1963.
