BC 862 LOOPUYT COLLECTION

Manuscripts & Archives

University of Cape Town Libraries

This collection was presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries by Mrs Lydia Loopuyt, of 44 Berkeley Square, Rondebosch, on the 1 July 1986. It includes various information on the Nusas Overseas Tour of 1925-1926 of which Mrs Loopuyt (nee Bennett), a student at U.C.T. from 1921-1925, was a member, and some memorabilia of the University.

Additions were received from Miss A Loopuyt in 1990. These comprise the Loopuyt family papers, which are an interesting assortment of memorabilia dealing with family members living between the years 1811 and 1982. The correspondence is between family members in South Africa and Holland, and is written in Dutch. The primary correspondent is Elizabeth Maria Cornelia Loopuyt, the wife of the Hon.Vice Consul for the Netherlands, who, by 1915 had gained much respect from people such as Dr D F Malan, for her continuing support of a high standard of Dutch and a strengthening of ties between South Africa and Holland. The bulk of the correspondence was written between the years 1896 and 1913, and a number of important events, such as the celebrations of Queen Wilhelmina's birthday and the 1910 pageant, are mentioned. There is a clear reflection of family life during these years with the birth of each subsequent child. The collection includes Elizabeth Loopuyt's last Will and Testament and a family tree, clearly describing the early background of the family. The descendents of the family are now scattered through South Africa, Canada, the United States and Holland; and members have lived in Australia, Mozambique, Sumatra and Java.
