INTRODUCTION

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Walter Floyd (1875-1934) was born in Lewisham, Kent. After gaining a first class matriculation pass in 1892, he registered as a dental student in October of that year and was apprenticed

to a dentist in Kent for three years 'to learn the Art, Trade or Business of Mechanical Dentist'. In May 1895 he registered at Guy's Hospital, London.

It is uncertain when he came out to South Africa, though records prove that he was living here by January 1902. In 1904 he bought a practice in Cape Town (for £2,404 16s 8d), and in June 1909 he entered into partnership with William Johnston.

He was very active in dental politics, being an office-bearing member of the Dental Society of the Cape Province, and a member of the South African Dental Association. For a large part of the 1920s he was the key figure in formulating and presenting the dentists' case against unqualified dental mechanics in the proposed new medical bill, which was passed in 1928 as the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Act.

In early 1914 he married Agnes Chamberlain, who had come out to South Africa in 1907 from her home near Bristol. They had four children: Eleanor, Hugh, Katherine and Godfrey.

After Walter's death in 1934 Agnes Floyd started a riding school which she ran very successfully until the early 1950s, after which she had the stables converted into 'The Mews', six maisonettes.

She died in 1977.

THE COLLECTION

The Floyd Family Papers were presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1978 by Hugh Floyd, and number 6,979 items.

The Collection contains the personal papers of Walter Floyd and Agnes Floyd, papers concerning the financial affairs of the family, a large quantity of papers on dental matters and papers relating to Agnes Floyd's business ventures: the riding school and the maisonettes.

Walter Floyd's personal papers include documents such as school certificates, insurance policies, passport etc. and personal correspondence. There is some very interesting material relating

to a hunting trip he made in (then) Northern Rhodesia in 1913, including his safari diary, photographs and a medicine case acquired for the trip. His letters to Agnes at this time also describe the holiday in vivid detail.

There are also papers and photographs from his period of service in the South African Medical Corps in German East Africa in 1915 and 1916.

The dental papers include legal and financial papers of the dental practice, papers of the various dental societies to which Walter Floyd belonged from 1905 to 1934 and letters on various dental matters. A large section is devoted to papers relating to the Medical, Dental and Pharmacy Act of 1928, and this contains correspondence, memoranda and notes.

Agnes Floyd's papers include personal correspondence, correspondence, accounts and photographs relating to the riding

school, and accounts and correspondence about the maisonettes.

The family financial papers date from 1913 to 1977. They include dealings with accountants, lawyers, architects and the bank, papers regarding stock and shares and income tax, electricity and water accounts.

There are no restrictions on the use of the Collection but permission should first be obtained from the University Librarian.
