Letters, personal and official documents, invitations, clippings, telegrams, pamphlets, electoral notices, notes for speeches, minutes of meetings, parliamentary bills, the papers of Morris Alexander, 1899 - 1946.

 

 

Mr Alexander's letters (copies) are to be found in his Letter books for the period up to 1934 see Section B below]. For the period from 1934 - 1946, typescript copies of his letters have been filed in with the other material in the Box Files.

 

 

Arrangement of the Box Files is strictly chronological, there being usually some six months' material in each file.

 

 

The material in these files is general in matter. No Jewish material is to be found here. All Jewish material can be found together under Section C below.

 

 

While most of the material in these Box Files deal with Mr Alexander directly, there is also a certain amount of clippings, pamphlets, etc., on subjects he was interested in, interfiled with the rest of the material in date order.

 

 

The type of subjects dealt with include Coloured Affairs (and Indian Affairs) in all its aspects, particularly as regards the Coloureds' working conditions, health, etc., etc., i.e. the Welfare of the Coloureds and Indians. Other major topics include Immigration and other Problems of Aliens, matter connected with the many parliamentary Bills he was interested in, (Income Tax, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Coloured and Indians, Workers' matters, etc.), much on his various campaigns on Parliamentary Elections, and correspondence dealing with the many requests for assistance with their problems he received from his constituents and others.

 

 

Except for his Case Books [see Section B below] none of his legal papers are in this Collection. They have all presumably been destroyed as being confidential to his various clients.

B.

16 Letter and Case Books, covering the period 1902-1937 [16 volumes]

 

 

Some of these contain only copies of his letters, some contain only copies of his various legal opinions, while several have letters and legal opinions interspersed. All are of course chronological in arrangement. Legal opinions as well as letters are almost invariably carefully dated. The letters cease to appear in 1934, the cases go on until 1937. Letters from 1934 are to be found interfiled with the other material in Section A.

7 Box Files, 1903-1946, containing Jewish Board of Deputies material (letters, documents, etc.) Mr Alexander was one of the founders of the Cape Board, and was its Chairman for many years.
