INTRODUCTION TO THE COLLECTION

Goolam Husain Gool and Halima H Gool (nee Nagdee) were active in the Anti-CAD, All African Convention, National Liberation League, Non-European Unity Movement, Worker’s Party of South Africa, and The Fourth International of South Africa.

Dr. Goolam Husain Gool (1905-1962) was sent to Aligargh College in India, a well-known Muslim College, at the age of nine, but left when the passive resistance campaign in India of 1919-21 shut down the college.  He completed his medical training at Guys Hospital in London.  When he returned to South Africa, he set up a practice in Clermont.

His world view was shaped by Trotsky’s teachings. This perspective was evident in his involvement in a number of organisations.  His approach at times elicited harsh criticism.  He was a founding member of the All African Convention in 1935 and president  of the National Liberation League in

1937-1938 before being expelled in 1939.  Furthermore, he was a founding member of the Anti-CAD and a vice chairman of the Non-European Unity Movement from 1945 until his death in 1962.

Halima Hawa Gool (1918- ) was a dedicated member in a wide variety of organisations.  She was deeply committed to trade union issues.  Moreover, she played a prominent role in Anti-CAD fund raising activities.

The collection comprises mainly correspondence to Halima Gool from family, friends, and comrades.  In addition, it contains private letters between Halima and Goolam Gool, personal documents, and family photographs.
