BC 1015 RICHARDSON DIARIES

Manuscripts & Archives

University of Cape Town Libraries

This collection consists of three diaries, for 1937, 1940 and 1941, written by an anonymous woman, possibly Mrs M Richardson.

The 1937 diary describes her travels in Europe and elsewhere with her husband.

The 1940 diary describes wartime conditions in England, and tells of the couple's departure for South Africa, evidently on account of the husband's health.

It contains interesing comments on places and people in Cape Town and elsewhere in South Africa (eg Montagu, Drakensberg etc).

The 1941 diary describes their decision to stay in South Africa anf their settling down in a flat in Kenilworth, Cape Town. It includes several pages of household accounting.

The latter part of this diary is in Shorthand, which the diarist has been teaching herself.

The diaries were donated to the University of Cape Town Libraries by Mrs B Rubenstein in 1986.
