BC 1091 CAPE TIMES COLLECTION

DESCRIPTION

1. COMPOSITION

THE CAPE TIMES COLLECTION, which was deposited with UCT Libraries in 1996, is a large collection, containing a wide variety of material - from photographs of staff retirement parties to police summonses for alleged contraventions of publishing laws.

Although it does contain some interesting clippings, as well as some complete historical and commemorative issues of THE CAPE TIMES, and other SA newspapers, the collection is not exclusively one of old printings of THE CAPE TIMES going back into the last century.   It is mainly a compilation of letters, memos, telex, etc. showing interaction between members of the staff, their news sources and their readers.

Also included are some old cartoons, sketches and photographs, which are of particular historical interest; such as an Anglo-Boer War album of 500+ photographs.

The collection  contains the usual institutional archival material of various committee meeting minutes; and accounts ledgers - 71 of these covering the period, 1902-1972.

2. ARRANGEMENT

Because of the 20 year (30 year for sensitive sections) restriction the depositor has imposed upon the collection, it has been necessary to adopt a strictly chronological arrangement of the papers within each section, so that successive sub-sections can be derestricted with each passing year.

Following on from the scene-setting sections of History, Management, and Staffing in the collection's arrangement, a natural logical order has been followed, covering the planning, then the production of newscopy; followed by reviews and reaction to the copy.

Technical processing and production of the newspaper, considered of lesser importance than the production of newscopy, have been placed in the final sections of the sequence.

In order to maintain this logical progression, it has been necessary to include some cross-referencing.

3. SPECIAL NOTE

The long sections dealing with the difficulties experienced by the Press during the apartheid years, especially in the mid-1980s when a general State of Emergency existed, are of particular interest.   They document and highlight the constraints, restrictions, harassment from both the private and public sectors, and the consequent frustrations under which newspaper staff are often compelled to work.   These constraints were particularly stringent during the 80s.   It is interesting to see how various staff members dealt with these problems.   The support not only of peers, but also of management, as well as other newspapers throughout the country, during these difficult years, is evident in these papers.

4. APPLICATION

The researcher will be able to trace the history of THE CAPE TIMES, back to its inception in 1876, with its various editors and changing policies.   Also the evolving social history of Cape Town, and the political history of the country are reflected in this collection.

Attention is drawn to the following UCT manuscripts collections, which also deal with Press issues or personalities:

BC 639 David Marais Cartoons

BC 1010 Hennessy Collection (papers dealing with the history of the Press in SA)(restricted)

BCS 67 "To remember my father - B K Long" by Una Long (B K Long was Editor of CT from 1921-35)

BC 217 Laidler Miscellany (extensive notes dealing with the freedom of the Press)

BC 312 WGA Mears (letters re the freedom of the Press 1825-29)

NB In addition to the papers which have been lodged at this institution, THE CAPE TIMES has deposited other archival documents with the South African Library.   These comprise clippings books and bound volumes of THE CAPE TIMES ANNUAL from 1895 to 1940.
