Philip
Segal was born in Cape Town in 1915. He was educated at Hillel College and
graduated from UCT in 1934 with an Arts degree. He subsequently attained a
Masters degree at UCT in 1936, a Masters degree at the University College,
London in 1939 and a B Ed at UCT in 1940.
In
1941 he became a temporary lecturer in English Literature at UCT and in 1946 - a
permanent lecturer. 1946 was also the year in which he married. In 1956 he
became a senior lecturer and then Acting Head of Department in 1961. He was
appointed to the second chair of English at the University of the Witwatersrand
in 1966. He died in December 1970 at the age of 55.
The
collection includes personal Memorabilia in the form of school and degree
certificates, curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, photographs -
including those of T S Elliot and Sidney Clouts, and several of Phillip Segal in
different dramatic roles. Also included are newscuttings, some of which record
his relationship with the 'Friends of Italy Association', correspondence from
people such as Guy Butler, Sidney Clouts, and Maria Leveson, who edited the book
'Philip Segal essays and lectures', after his death. Lastly there are
newscuttings and notes concerning the production of 'Authors Live' presented on
19 April 1970, copies of lectures and articles and one audiotape of his UCT
Summerschool Lecture "The City in Literature".
