Herbert
Stanley Morris was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1892, but attended school in
the Eastern Cape. He went to the Bedford Public School and then to the South
African College (now UCT) in 1907. By 1909 he had completed an Honours Degree in
Botany and won the 1908 medal for Botany. He subsequently became District
Commissioner on the island of Fiji and A.D.C. to the Governor, and later, during
World War One, joined the Royal Flying Corps in England. He died in 1919 in an
aircraft accident in England and was buried there.
The
collection is made up of a number of botanical notebooks owned by Mr Morris,
filled with notes taken by him during his sojourn at the S A College. Included
are three sketches of wild flowers done from photographs and a group photograph
taken in the year 1909 at the South African College.
