The
Liberal Party came into being after the General Election of 1953. It was to
embrace the ideals of non-racial democracy and universal suffrage. The party
enjoyed limited support and had ± 40 members arrested or banned in the early
1960s. It was disbanded in 1968 with the prohibition of political interference
Act. Mr W B West was an executive member of the party.
The
Collection contains Liberal Party Papers collected by Mr West between the years
1954 and 1968. They include Policy statements, legal advice, reports, notices
and minutes of meetings and national conferences and congresses, articles,
speeches and statements. Also included are newspaper cuttings, publications and
correspondence between Feb 1955 and April 1959, and miscellaneous United and
Progressive party material.
