Mary Maytham Kidd was born on 24 January 1914 in East London. She attended Roedean School in the Transvaal and went to Paris, France in 1930. She attended the Sorbonne and thereafter the Royal Academy School. London.

In May 1948 she married Hubert John Kidd, the headmaster of the Diocesan College, Rondebosch. On 21 November 1950, her well-known and definitive book ‘Wild flowers of the Cape Peninsula’ was published, with a foreword by Field Marshal J C Smuts.

Mrs Kidd has been responsible for designs for both china crockery and Christmas cards and calendars; and for illustrations of particular types of fungi growing in the Cape Peninsula, published in Miss E L Stephens' two field guides: ‘Some South African edible fungi’ and some ‘South African poisonous and inedible fungi’.

The Collection comprises personal papers, general memorabilia, diaries, travel notes, designs, sketchbooks and some publications by other artists. Also information regarding Mrs Kidd's book ‘Wild flowers of the Cape Peninsula’

Included is a scrapbook containing original botanical watercolours by Ethel May Dixie.
