G13.6.2

The National Affairs Association (NAA) Minutes 1981 - 83

Note: The NAA seems to date back to the Serviceman's Vigilance Association in approximately 1946. It appealed to the (white) public's good sense by presenting the ‘unvarnished' facts in the form of lectures on politics, economics, tribal systems etc and occasionally took up more challenging positions eg it opposed the exclusion of Africans from the common role in 1946. Robert Cary (co-author of Who's Who with Diane Mitchell) was a chairman of the NAA and in 1972 invited an ANC speaker (Eddison Zvobgo) to an NAA meeting, after an initial period of good will relations between the NAA and the nationalists deteriorated.

(It seems likely that the NAA was called the Rhodesian National Affairs Association at one stage)

G13.7

National Pledge Association

Convention (1976)

Copies of September Declaration

Press Clips

Newsletters

Note: The NPA was formed in 1976 by a group of young professionals, with Robert Stumbles, a lawyer, as its chairman. Its aim was to demonstrate popular support for the gout's reform of discriminatory legislation and practice by getting signed pledges that supported an end to discrimination. The association was strenuously non-party political but had the support of the Rhodesia Party while it's RF members were influential in softening the tone of NPA's criticism of the government. This in fact resulted in two different versions of the pledge being circulated. The NPA actually joined the NUF in about January 1977.
