Graham Viney was educated at Bishops and then at the University of Cape Town where he obtained a History Honours Degree in 1975. He furthered his education at Oxford, where he obtained a B.Litt in 1978 with his thesis - 'Angola; a study in foreign intervention'.

The papers include the legal, research, draft material and some photographs (By Alain Proust) used in the preparation for his book, 'Colonial Houses of South Africa'. It was published in 1987 by Struik-Winchester Publishers and Book Distributors.

They also contain correspondence and publicity documents pertaining to the book, as well as information on a number of houses that re­mains unpublished.
