Letter
from Rocco Catoggio to his relatives in Italy explaining why it has been
impossible for him to write to them before July 1833. He had gone to
Spain, during the Peninsular War, had been captured by the British and
taken to England where he was pressed into the British Army and sent to
the Cape. He served for over six years at the Cape and then took his discharge
and settled there. Gives interesting contemporary view of conditions at
the Cape c. 1820's to 1830's. MSS |
