MISCELLANEOUS

Professor George Wille Q.C. was born in Graaf-Reinet in ca 1880, and read for his B.A.LLB. at Cambridge , after which he was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple . Returning to South Africa in 1903, he was a member of the Transvaal Bar for eighteen years, where he practiced as an advocate.

He became the first full-time professor of law at U.C.T. in 1920, holding the chair until 1945, and lecturing chiefly on Roman-Dutch law. Many judges in South Africa and Rhodesia studied under him. He was made a K.C. in 1925. At the time of his retirement in 1945, he was Dean of the Faculty of Law. In 1959 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University.

Professor Wille was one of the best-known legal writers in South Africa . His works included 'Landlord and Tenant in South Africa ', 'Mercantile Law in South Africa ' (written in collaboration with Mr Justice Philip Millin, husband of the novelist Sarah Gertrude Millin), ‘Principles of South African Law’ and ‘Law for the Layman’.

He was known too for his liberal outlook, and for his support of equal legal rights for women and of the extension of the full benefit of the law to South Africa 's underprivileged classes.  Professor Wille died at Hermanus in 1965, aged 85, survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
