INTRODUCTION

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Harry Gordon Lawrence, B.A.LLB,Q.C. (1901‑1973) was born in Cape Town and educated at Rondebosch Boys' High School and the University of South Africa. While studying for his BA he taught at the Western Province Preparatory School from 1919 to 1921. In 1922 he was appointed registrar to Judge F.G. Gardiner and wrote articles on a variety of subjects to supplement his income. He obtained his BA in 1923, his LLB in 1925 and in 1926 was called to the Bar. 1926 also saw the start of Lawrence's serious involvement in politics.

He entered Parliament in 1929 as South African Party M.P. for Salt River and retained his seat until 1961, when he stood as representative of the Progressive Party and was defeated. From 1938 to 1948 Lawrence held various Cabinet posts including Labour, Interior, Public Health, Welfare & Demobilization and Justice. In 1947 Lawrence was the South African delegate to the British Commonwealth Conference, Canberra and South African delegate at the United Nations.

H.G. Lawrence was involved in the formation of the Progressive Party in 1959 and became the Party's National Chairman in 1960.

H.G. Lawrence married Jean St Leger Searle, daughter of Sir Malcolm Searle, in 1931 and they had two sons, Christopher and Jeremy.

THE COLLECTION

The Harry Gordon Lawrence Papers were presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1977 and 1978 by Mrs H.G. Lawrence and number 8 589 items.  Further additions were received from Mr Jeremy Lawrence in 2000 and 2002.  e collection consists of documents relating mainly to H.G. Lawrence's political career which stretched from 1929 to the 1960s. These include diaries 1938‑1943, 1947‑1973; correspondence; speeches; articles, memoranda; pamphlets; newspaper clippings etc. and cover election campaigns, 1929‑1961; Lawrence's cabinet positions as Minister of Labour, Interior, Public Health, Welfare & Demobilization, Justice, 1938‑1948; as well as his role in the Indian problem and as South African delegate to the United Nations in 1947 etc.  ere is important material on the formation of the Progressive Party in 1959.  Other material in the collection includes notes etc. on legal cases, numerous articles and broadcasts, speeches, pamphlets and newspaper clippings on topics such as politics, railways, unemployment, housing etc., 1920‑1970s.  There are no restrictions on the use of the collection, but permission should first be obtained from the University Librarian.
