INTRODUCTION

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John Michael Smalberger was born in Kimberley on the 13th February 1945 and died on the 20th January 1977. He matriculated at Kimberley Boys' High School in 1962. He obtained his B.Com. degree at U.C.T. in 1965 and his BA(Hons) in Economics in 1966. In 1969 he completed his M.A. thesis on Copper mining in Namaqualand, a revision of which was published in 1975 under the title: 'Aspects of the history of copper mining in Namaqualand, 1846-1931'. During the time he worked on his thesis he was employed first as a clerk at Mobil, and then in the Department of Economics at U.C.T.

In 1970 he registered for a Ph.D., planning to write a thesis on the history of Namaqualand, but after being awarded a scholarship for study overseas he went to the University of Edinburgh as a non-graduating student. At this time he became interested in the history of diamond mining in South Africa.

When he returned to South Africa at the end of 1971 he entered employment with the Cape Archives and worked there until April 1976, during which time he completed the History II and III courses at UNISA, revised his M.A. thesis, and published two articles on aspects of diamond mining.

He registered for a Ph.D. degree at U.C.T. on the 'History of the Diamond Fields, 1869-1888'. The general emphasis was to be on labour conditions, and he had collected a great amount of material, though he had not yet started writing his thesis, at the time of his death.

In September 1976 another article on the diamond fields was published.

Besides his work on the diamond fields, he was also collecting material for, and planning articles on, various aspects of labour in South Africa, and a history of homosexuals in S.A. from 1652 to 1977.

THE COLLECTION

The John Michael Smalberger Collection was donated from the estate of J.M. Smalberger in 1977. It numbers approximately 5 748 items.

The Collection consists largely of material collected for his M.A. thesis on the history of copper mining in Namaqualand, and his planned Ph.D. thesis on the history of diamond mining in Griqualand West, 1869-1888.

The copper mining section contains much photocopied

material from the Archives of the Springbok magistracy, including annual reports on prices and wages, statistics, and native affairs, and other correspondence. There are also government publications relevant to Namaqualand, some information on the individual copper mines, photographs, and extracts from k books and articles, most of these being photocopies. There is also information on reference cards.

The material on the diamond fields (which constitutes the largest section of the Collection) consists mainly of photocopies from the Griqualand West Archives in the Cape Archives Depot. The emphasis is on the labour aspect, and shows how I.D.B. and the concern about Blacks buying firearms and carrying them back to their tribes through the Boer Republics led to the institution of the compound and pass systems, and so has relevance to many of South Africa's present problems. There is material on the labour-recruiting expeditions to the interior, gaols and convict stations, labour statistics, and I.D.B. There is also material on the various diggers' associations of 1871 to 1875, whose agitation led to the dismissal of Southey. There are many photocopies from the Griqualand West newspapers of the 1870's and 1880's. There

is also information on reference cards.

The Collection includes typescripts of articles on the diamond fields, planned and published, and material collected for these articles.

Also in the Collection is material on labour in S.A. history (history of Black strikes, supply of native labour in the 19th century), on individuals (A.A.S. le Fleur of Griqualand East, Herbert Rhodes), racial discrimination in the 20th century, detentions and bannings, and the history of homosexuals in South Africa from 1652 to 1977.

There are no restrictions on the use of the Collection, but permission should first be obtained from the University Librarian.
