INTRODUCTION

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE              

Canon Edward Judge was born in 1801 and educated at St. Paul's School, London and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1824 he became a Deacon of the Church of England, and in 1825 arrived at the Cape to be rector of the Grammar School. He was ordained in Cape Town in 1832. During the 1830's he was Professor of English and Classical Literature at the South African College, as well as holding the post of Colonial Chaplain to 4iynberg and Rondebosch. In 1840 he was appointed Episcopal Chaplain of Simonstown and in 1848 became parish priest in Simonstown, a post he held until shortly before his death in 1875.  In 1851 he became a canon. Canon Judge was the Senior Priest and Clerical Father of the Diocese.          

Edward Arthur Judge, son of Canon Judge, was born in 1836. He started his career in the Civil Service as a clerk in Simonstown in 1856. In 1862 he was appointed acting magistrate and Civil Commissioner in Namaqualand, a post he took up full time in 1864. In 1868 he was moved to Queenstown, in 1875 to Kingwilliamstown, and in 1877 he was moved in quick succession to Fiynberg, Paarl and Worcester. In 1882 he was appointed Resident Magistrate and Registrar of Deeds in Kimberley, a post he held until his retirement in 1900. Judge sat on numerous government commissions, notably boundary commissions. In 1896 he was chairman of the commission     

on the rearrangement of diversions in British Bechuanaland. In 1892 he was made a member of the Special Court. He died in 1907.           

 

THE COLLECTION   

The Judge Family Papers were presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1968 by Mrs J. Inglis and Mrs Ruth Thompson, granddaughters of E.A. Judge, and number 103 items.              

The Papers consist of personal documents relating to the careers of Canon Edward Judge and his son Edward Arthur Judge. Canon Judge's papers include birth, marriage and ordination certificates and letters of appointment signed by Bishop Robert Gray, and cover the period 1824-1875.               

The major part of the papers are those of E.A. Judge. These are particu­larly relevant to the history of the Eastern Cape, 1870-1876. Personalities like Charles Brownlee, first Secretary for Native Affairs, John X.Merriman, Sir Theophilus Shepstone and Dr. James Stewart of Lovedale are mentioned        

in the papers. There is also material relating to Namaqualand, Griqualand West and Matabeleland, 1862-1900, including handwritten copies of the reports of Commissions on which Judge sat.
