Orthography

This section consists mainly of correspondence, reports and minutes of the Union Government   Advisory Committee on Bantu Study and Research and its Sub‑Committee on Orthography.This   Sub‑Committee was divided into District Committees (Zulu, Sotho‑Tswana‑Pedi, and Xhosa) whose aims were to discuss the standardisation and possible unification of all Bantu languages. Members of the Sub‑Committee and District Committees were distinguished linguists, teachers, missionaries, and lecturers, all of whom were anxious to achieve a Uniform Orthography. Dr C M Doke was the Convenor and Chairman of the Sub‑Committee (he was the son of missionary, artist and author J J Doke). Others (beside Lestrade) on the various committees were Mr W G Bennie (Inspector of Native Education in the Cape ‑ stun of J A Bennie, a missionary and linguist and grandson of J Bennie cofounder of Lovedale Mission, brilliant linguist, known as "the father of Xhosa Literature". 1796‑1869); Dr W Eiselen (Stellenbosch University), Professor D D T Jabavu (Fort Hare, distinguished scholar and linguist); Dr D McK Malcolm (Natal Education Dept:), Mr G H Franz (OFS and later TVL Education Dept.), Sol T Plaatje (interpreter, journalist, politician and author and champion of the "black" people); Mr H J E Dumbrell (Education‑Botswana Admin.) and various nominees of Missionary Societies e.g. Revds. Jennings, Jensen, Motshumi, Stegman, Baumbach etc. There is also correspondence between GPL and various Education Committees, missionary societies and individuals involved in Bantu Languages Orthography.
