INTRODUCTION
The
Mackenzie Collection was presented to the University of Cape Town Libraries in
memory of Dr. James Rutherford Mackenzie (1863-1917) and his wife Susan (nee
Lindenberg, 1865-1952), by their daughter Dr. Barbara Alida Mackenzie in 1958. Dr. B.A. Mackenzie gave a donation of money which was
used to purchase 29 manuscript items offered for sale by Struik in 1958,
formerly part of Major W. Jardine's Collection.
The
Collection contains one or more letters from the following: Olive Schreiner,
J.H. Meurant, Marie Koopmans de Wet, John X. Merriman, Rudyard Kipling and F.C.
Kolbe. There are also various government documents from the late eighteenth and
early nineteenth centuries, as well as manuscript volumes including five school
books written by P.G. Brink in 1809, later Colonial Secretary at the Cape.
