James Benjamin Thom (number 31234) was sent to Green Point POW camp, Cape Town. Records that show James being sent to Winburg Camp from Green point before he went to India are confirmed by a small letter card (2) which he sent to his sister from Winburg camp on 12.8.1901.
James Benjamin was sent to India on the SS Aurania on or about 19.3.1902 (date from Ms. Wessels) and served his time at Bhimtal in Attarakhand.
He signed an Oath of Allegiance to King Edward VII at Bhimtal on the 23.7.1902. (The war had ended officially on the 31st of May) and he left Bhim –Tal on 3.9.1902. (2) They travelled to the coast by train and boarded the ‘SS Sirsa’ at Bombay and landed at Delagoa Bay 4.10.1902. (His diary – 2)
