Quick Guide

The Quick Guide is a list of all the items relevant to the Black Sash in this particular collection.

Repository: Manuscripts and Archives, University of Cape Town Libraries, University of Cape Town
Reference code: BC668
Extent: 276 boxes, 5 video boxes processed. +/-2 shelves unprocessed materials
City: Cape Town
Dated: 1955-1998
Scope:The Archive covers the years 1955-1990s and comprises minutes, conference papers, correspondence, newsletters, newspaper clippings, etc., some sections being more complete than others. The wide range of issues in which the Black Sash has been involved is reflected in the collection, including much information on group areas, influx control, detention, education, children and many others. The Sash has also had dealings with a wide range of organisations, and these are also reflected in the collection.

Some of the Sash's most significant work has been carried out in its advice offices in urban centres, helping Black people with problems such as housing, unemployment, pensions, influx control, etc. The Athlone Advice Office was the first such office founded in the country - originally supported jointly by the Western Cape regions of the Black Sash and the South African Institute of Race Relations. This Archive, now called the Black Sash Advice Office Archive, has been listed separately (BC 1020), but should be consulted in conjunction with the Black Sash (Cape Western Region) Archive. Its files demonstrate the incredible tangle of laws and regulations which have governed the lives of the country's Black people.
