31/8/1901: Sr Geyer to Secy ORC Admin: I was exceedingly disappointed on my recovery from an illness a few weeks back, to be informed by the Supt of the RC here that he had received instructions to tell me that my services as nurse in the RC here would no longer be required. This I understand was the result of an application made to be allowed to work amongst the sick people in the open camp.
Her object in making this application was wrongly interpreted. I had not the remotest intention to avoid the supervision of the doctors or any of the authorities. But because of the very large number of sick people, many of the said not treated in the hospital; with the view to assist them. Having been told by the Supt that nurses when coming to work in the hospital, I therefore made the application to work in the open camp. I had done the work in the hospital for three months under very trying circumstances, so I anticipated in the change a slight relief. The doctor asked me if in case of necessity my services were required in the hospital, if I would give them any assistance, I readily agreed. Trusts he will have no objection to the services I am offering. I am prepared to go as nurse to Norvals Pont or any other of the RCs that you may deem fit; I have all along, I think tried to give satisfaction as far as lay in my power; and it would be a great disappointment to abandon the work for which I came out here.
Note on file: SRC Kimberley to CSRC: There is some mistake evidently. Nurse Geyer was not suspended by me - I have nothing whatever against her, she is an exceptionally nice, well behaved girl and a good nurse. It was owing to her dislike to serve under the paid nurses sent her, I think which sent her, to hospital, as my SMO informs me that at the time she went there was no absolute need for such a step. Women like Miss Geyer could never make up her mind whether she really wanted to go or stay. I know of no reasons why she should not be re-employed.
To be transferred to Norvals Pont.
