Wants to go to Uitenhage where Mrs Nowers is living. Encloses medical certificate. 21/5/1901: HSH Callum, MO: Mr Nowers suffering from debility after an attack of colitis, needs change of air and rest. 3/6/1901: Nowers to CSRC: Reminding him of request. He had a very severe attack and was in bed for 12 days; wants month's leave to visit family; last holiday he had was in February 1897. 'I experienced a very trying time during the war & the worry in camp here & the mistake I made by trying to attend to everything in Camp & doing all the work myself, were too much for me.' Also suffers from insomnia & in his sleep is always busy with the camp. 3/6/1901: Leave granted. On file cover: 20/5/1901, CSRC to Secy, ORC Admin: Should be glad if Mr Nowers could be found other employment and not sent back to me for duty in RC camps; does not find him satisfactory. 28/5/1901: Secy to DA: Grant leave asked for & query inform him that it may not be possible to reemploy him. He is not a very suitable man for an Rmship.
November 1901: A Kentish man by birth, formerly landdrost of Philippolis and then of Ficksburg under the OFS government. When the British came, he was reinstated as RM of Ficksburg, but fled to Basutoland for fear of the Boers. [FSAR, SRC 16/RC6385, Dr Kendal Frank's report on Orange River RC, November 1901] |

Date appointed (as staff): | 5/3/1901 |
Notes: | 18/5/1901: I have no great opinion of Mr Nowers as a Supt of a refugee camp; although perhaps a first class magistrate, he seemed helpless, nervous and rather wanting in common sense, and had allowed his clerk to sign his name for him on passes which I stopped at once. |
