Camp History
Name:Thaba 'Nchu
Date appointed (as staff):12/4/1901
Notes:8/4/1901: Daniel to CSRC: re post as MO to the new NRC at Thaba 'Nchu: 1) Site selected for the camp is 3 miles away from town, this will necessitate me keeping a trap and pr. of horses, and feeding the latter. 2) The number of natives in the camp ill probably be large (anything up to 5,000) and they will require a good deal of attention and time besides that occupied in driving two and fro. Shall have to ldo all compounding and dispensing myself. Under circumstances considers salary offered, viz. 10/- pd very inadequate and suggests that 20/- pd would be fairer, provided received rations for 2 horses daily, or 25/- pd without rations for horses. Notes arrangements will have to be made re medicines etc as there is no chemist in town. There is great difficulty in ? up drugs & his present supply is very limited. Adds that he was asked to take charge of the military hospital here at 20/- pd with rations. This requires less time and work than he anticipates from the natives.
