Notes:B in Dublin in 1851, entered Univ of Dublin in 1867, BA 1872, MB 1875, MD 1876. LCS (Ireland) 1875, FCS (Ireland) 1878, then studied in Leipzig. 1878 elected Surgeon to Adelaide Hospital in Dublin, a post he held with distinction, and in the early 1880s became a member of the council of the RCS in Ireland; elected v-p in 1896, at the height of his career and held in high regard by his peers in Ireland. Held senior surgical appointments outside the Adelaide Hospital, was surgeon in ordinary to the Lord Lt of Ireland and v-p of the Dublin branch of the BMA.

Immigrated to SA in 1897 on account of the illness of his wife, and settled in Jhb. Appointed as consultant surgeon to the Expeditionary Force, attached to Lord Roberts' staff and accompanied the C-in-C while in SA. Returned to England with Roberts, but returned to SA in 1901. Given the task of inspecting the refugee camsp, but 'was obviously out of his depth in dealing with this matter for which he had no qualification'.

1904 knighthood conferred on him; remained in practice in Jhb. Died in Jhb in 1920.
