Notes:6/1/1902: Pou to CSRC: Applies for job, having just seen ad in morning paper. Qualifications: AB and MD from University of Michigan, Licentiate of the Michigan and California State Board of Medical Examiners and Registration. Just resigned surgeonship of SS Montezuma. Has been sent by Sir Thos K Murrray to Col McCormack PMO at this place [Durban] who today passed my certificates &c and is to send me for service to Merebank tomorrow. Is willing to remain in the service as long as necessary.
14/1/1902: Note from Tonkin: It would be inadvisable to employ this man. We have no guarantee of his qualifications and no knowledge of the standing of his university.
15/1/1902: Reply to Pou: Refusing on grounds that all vacancies have already been filled.
