Notes:29/3/1901: Taking over from Trollope on 1 April; from Indian Medical Service

24/2/1902: Presidency Paymaster, Bombay: Certifying that Col JS Wilkins, DSO, IMS, has received his pay and allowances up to 31/1/1902, and will be paid from 1/2/1902 up to date preceeding embarkation.
Being paid [in ORC] at £2000 pa.

2/3/1903: CSRC to Colonial Secretary, Bloemfontein: As the work in his office has very considerably diminished, thinks his services can be dispensed with at the end of the present month. Asks permission to return to India by the first mail in April. The sale of goods at the Bloemfontein and Kimberley camps will be finished at the end of the week, and Springfontein by the middle of the month. That only leaves Brandfort to be disposed of and that can be done by others. Asks to be allowed to return to India via England as Lt. Col. Thompson was allowed to do.

15/11/1902: Wilkins to Buchan: As I hear a report that all Indian Officers are to return to India on the expiration of the present year, I write to ask if this order affects me, because when I asked if I could come to South Africa, the Government of India informed me that my period of service here was indefinite. I write to ask as I would like to know what HE The Governor intends doing with me, so that I can make the necessary arrangements.
Unless the Government of India are particularly anxious to have me back, I should much like to see the camps finished, and the Accounts closed; besides which I like the country very much, and Aden, which is the place of my next appointment, has no particular charms for me.

29/11/1902: Wilkins to PMO, Command, Poona: As informed that Col Maconochie IMS, at present PMO at Kurrachi, will probably be appointed Surgeon General Bombay, asks for transfer from Aden to Kurrachi. Reminds him that he has served practically 19 years in India without long leave, and in his whole service has had only 1 year's furlough, Oct 1882-1883. The climate of Aden is very trying, especially to himself who has had no long leave for so many years.
