Has been in govt employ in Bloemfontein for past 2 years; when Trollope took over CSRC on 18/2/1901, came to his office as clerk; was appointed head clerk on 1/6/1902, in which capacity now serving. Has not had a holiday, and only 6 weeks off when had enteric fever.
7/7/1902: unable to grant as transports full.
3/12/1902: Sheffield to CSRC: Overstayed leave. Explains circumstances. Trollope originally promised him leave; was only able to take this 4 months after Wilkins came. During the first two months of this period you were entirely new to the work and almost every question of moment was referred to me; this, in addition to my duties as chief clerk, which often kept me at the office from early morning till 10 or 11 o'clock at night, dreated a strain which might have had serious results had I not gone away when I did, even now I sometimes feel the effects of it. Feels it is a poor return that his salary was stopped for the few days he was late. Points out that the official in the Transvaal doing the same work is being paid £1000 pa.
