Notes:30/5/1901: JJ Marquard CT to DA: Pleads on behalf of refugees in and near Winburg. Their spiritual and moral interests call loudly for the presence amongst them of an ordained minister of religion. More than 13 months have elapsed since divine service was last conducted by a minister of the DRC. Has thrice applied to be allowed to return to Winburg, and declared his willingness to take an oath of the strictest possible neutrality. Now repeats application.
8/7/1901: HF Wilson in reply: HH unable to accede to request. Expresses his deep concern re spiritual welfare of refugees in ORC and taking steps to secure clergymen as soon as possible to look after them, including Winburg.
Notes on file: 26/6/1901: ? To Wilson: Notes he is described as 'undesirable'. Capt Trollope does not appear to want DRC ministers in his camps to be supported by govt.
27/6/1901: Harley to Wilson: Agrees with Trollope that this Dept should not be called upon to supply what is really sinews of war (stipend) to DRC clergymen in the camps. The DRC as a corporate body is sufficiently wealthy to support 'mission work' in the camps.
