Notes:29/1/1902: SRC Vredefort Rd to CSRC: Re suspension of Nurse Miller; will be reinstated in a few days; her suspension will no doubt act as a wholesome caution to her.
26/1/1902: SRC Vredefort Rd to CSRC: Enclosing PMO's complaint against her; she was warned previously about her conduct; fears for the safety of the hospital with an intoxicated person at night. She is one of the two nurses recently arrived from England.
Report of SMO, John Graham: She was dumb on duty last night; all the local assistants and many of the patients were laughing at her. What adds to the gravity of her case is that she must have taken the liquor from that issued to the patients; in other words, the patients went without. This is not her first offence. Fears she might set fire to the marquee and burn the whole hospital down. Asks that she be replaced by a reliable woman.
Cannot free from blame the new matron, Mrs Highway. Ever since her arrival she has grumbled because I refused to issue stimulants to the nurses, and on any wet night especially she has complained to the nursing sisters. A woman of her age and experience, she claims, ought to know that cocoa or coffee are 50 times better for keeping one warm than any alcoholic stimulant. Has no doubt that such speaking encouraged Sister Miller in taking the first drink.
28/1/1902: CSRC to CSO, GOC CT: Wants passage to send her back for serious misconduct.
