Camp History
Name:Orange River RC
Notes:16/9/1901: AD Eichoff to JG Faser, Bloemfontein: asking him to use his influence to have his wife and family removed to Brandfort. At the beginning of August his wife and family (5) were taken by Col Henry's column from his farm Langlaagte and brought to OR camp. Had tried several times to get permission to have her moved, supported by Col North and PM. 'You can imagine yourself that I am most anxious to be united again with my family, especially as we had to pass through very severe hardships during the last 12 months and as my wife writes to me, that she was not allowed even to take a few mattrasses away and that she and the children have to sleep on the bare ground.' Believes a simple wire will solve the problem. He has been loyal all the time 'and through my openly declaring my reasons for becoming a British subject, I convinced other parties too that it was the right and only thing to do for all who had the welfare of the country at heart.'
19/9/1901: Superintendent, OR to CSRC: Asking that Mrs Eichhoff may join her husband at Brandfort; 2 deaths occurred in her family within 4 days.
20/9/1901: CSRC to Fraser: asking if any of the family are still on commando; in so the move cannot be allowed.
20/9/1901: to JG Fraser: going to OR station today; has since seeing Fraser yesterday, heard that his second eldest daughter had died. Hopes not to leave without his family.
