Date appointed (as staff):24/7/1901
Notes:24/7/1901: Superintendent, Kimberley, to CSRC: just arrived.

20/1/1902: ill with enteric

3/3/1902: From Dr Woodward: Forwarding medical certificate to say he is convalescent from enteric; in need of leave in order to recruit;
3/3/1902: Reply: granted 1 months leave.
1/3/1902: From Dr Woodward: Will be sufficiently recovered from enteric to travel by 10 March; wants permit to travel return from Kimberley to East London.
8/3/1902: From Dr Woodward: Is told SRC is trying to get someone in his stead as PMO; wants to know if this is true, would rather forgo leave than be ousted.
11/3/1902: Will stay away until 17/4/1902 unless hears to contrary.
8/3/1902: From Dr Woodward: Complaining that John Hunter was made PMO.

26/12/1901: WW to SRC, Kimberley: The resignation of Dr Elmes has left this camp with only two Mos. It is, of course, understood that at least three are necessary to properly attend to the health of about 4000 refugees. A few weeks ago the medical staff numbered four. This was reduced to three by the detailing of Dr Trumpeter to Brandfort. Can I have him back? He knows the people, and the people like him. He knows his work, likes his work, and does his work. I have confidence in him. If he could possibly be sent back to me, I would rather have him than a new man.

22/4/1902: CSRC to W: Regrets cannot reappoint him as SMO at Kimberley RC; asks him to proceed to OR Station.
25/4/1902: W to CSRC: When in Kimberley hospital he received a letter from Capt Johnson telling him that Dr John Hunter had been appointed SMO in his stead. Immediately wrote to CSRC who told him that on the expiration of his leave he would return to Kimberley as SMO. Points out he was the first SMO at Kimberley; he worked throught the epidemic; and took a great interest in the building of the hospital. He would rather be at Kimberley than at any other camp. Wants to remain there until the end. During his time the death rate steadily decreased, till it became the best of all the camps in that respect. Asks to come and see him. Occasionally he had some trouble to get Capt Johnson to attend to sanitary matters; for instance had to ask him repeatedly to put in a well, the water of which had been analysed and condemned. There are other matters he will write to him about but would be better explained at an interview. Was unaware that Capt Johnson had any personal animus towards him but apparently he has; my knowledge of him may be at the bottom of it. In any case, wants to collect his baggage [from Kimberley].
3/5/1902: Reply: Cannot sanction his return to Kimberley. Affairs there have been so unsatisfactory that I have now made arrangements which I trust will remove all friction. Has no objection to his going to Kimberley to fetch his baggage.

Date arrival:20/1/1902
Out patient:Yes
Notes:8/4/1902: Woodward to CSRC: Has been in East London since 19/3/1902, recruiting after enteric. Leave expires on 14/4/1902. Is going on very well, and has put on flesh, but am still easily tired and cannot do anything in a hurry. Feels another fortnight's idleness before returning to duty would give him a better chance of getting really fit. 12/4/1902: Reply: Agrees.
